The 500 meter (1600 feet) long outflow tunnel of the Strydom Dam developed severe leakage problems 45 meters (150 feet) below the waterline. Several attempts were made to repair the leaking concrete with repair materials from both Europe and United States. However, all attempts failed to stop the leakage due to tremendous hydrostatic water pressure.
In 1981, Kryton was contracted to supply the materials for the restoration and waterproofing of the concrete. The Krystol Crack Repair System was first utilized to stop the water and then the Krystol T1 & T2 Waterproofing System brush on system was applied to the chambers well below grade. Unlike previous attempts with other materials, the Kryton system worked as specified to stop the leaking water. To date the system is performing beyond expectation.
