Emirate Airlines recently constructed a seven-storey building to house the company’s call centre operations in the Dubai Outsource Zone (DOZ), the UAE. The building had to be built quickly to maximise the benefits from being located in the DOZ, thus it required a tight construction schedule.
The project team was initially concerned about the time it would take to apply the external waterproofing membrane originally specified in the building plans. However, Kryton came up with a solution.
Kryton supplied its Krystol Internal Membrane (KIM), a hydrophilic system that actually draws water into the concrete to form insoluble crystals. The crystals grow until all pores are blocked and no water can penetrate the concrete. Kryton’s crystalline formula allows concrete to self-seal hairline cracks up to 0.5 mm. This unique ability makes Kryton’s KIM highly versatile, useful and reliable for a wide range of applications.
Both the contractor and consultant of the project had previously used Kryton’s Krystol products to waterproof basements and water tanks, so they were confident that KIM would produce the same, if not better, results within the tight time frame.
Apart from Kryton’s KIM, the project was also using Krystol waterstop system, an advanced joint design system that provides both chemical and physical waterproofing barriers.
More than 3,275 cu m of KIM concrete was poured for the airline’s new call centre, which included two levels of below-grade parking. The project was successfully completed in 2008.
