Concrete Technology Today – vol.4 October 2009

Construction industry professionals today are looking to take their green commitments one step further. They want the structures they build to stand the test of time, minimising the impact of future repairs and the need to rebuild down the line. In addition, they want to create recyclable buildings with less jobsite waste.

The old methods of waterproofing concrete with oil-based, externally applied membranes are less acceptable in today’s eco-conscious environment. These membranes are applied using adhesives with high volatile organic compounds. In addition to affecting the atmosphere, the vapour from these compounds can cause respiratory problems for applicators. Membrane materials are often made from petroleum, which is an unsustainable resource. Not only do membranes deteriorate over time, resulting in leaks and the need for costly repairs, but they also prevent the concrete from being recycled when the structure’s useful life is over.

Today’s environmentally friendly alternative for creating waterproof concrete is integral waterproofing. Kryton’s integral crystalline waterproofing admixture creates dry, durable concrete structures. It keeps repair and maintenance costs down while also reducing costs in the long and short term. It is also environmentally responsible, extending the serviceable life of concrete structures, reducing jobsite waste and enabling the future recycling of concrete materials.

Progressive architects and engineers looking to boost a structure’s green qualities choose Kryton’s Krystol technology for its environmental attributes as well as its waterproofing ability. When the proprietary Krystol chemicals are mixed with cement, aggregate and water, they form millions of needle-like crystals inside the concrete. These crystals fill the concrete’s naturally occurring pores and voids, providing permanent waterproof protection. Kryton’s crystalline technology also has the ability to self-seal the hairline cracks that develop in concrete over time, protecting structures against water and contaminants that can weaken or destroy concrete and corrode steel reinforcements.

Krystol Internal Membrane, better known as KIM, also saves time and reduce site disturbance. The extra excavation that’s needed to allow for membranes to be applied to below-grade foundations is eliminated altogether. KIM also contributes to more efficient concrete waste management as concrete treated with the integral crystalline admixture can be recycled and the product is available in mixer-ready bags. KIM contains no volatile organic compounds and is non-toxic and safe for contact with potable water. Finally, Krystol contributes to the overall durability and life expectancy of a building by constantly stopping corrosion and other detrimental effects of water damage.
