Part of northern London, the village of Hampstead is known for some of the most expensive housing in the UK, holding more millionaires within its boundaries than any other area. With that in mind, a homeowner in Hampstead knew that constructing a new home with a basement in the already dense neighborhood would be a challenge.
To add to that challenge, the area of Hampstead was quite developed and the homeowner’s particular construction was going to take place right next to two luxury homes. Adding more to this challenge, the homeowner also wanted an exposed architectural concrete finish in the final design, which called for appropriate waterproofing.
Abbey Pynford, a company that specializes in ground engineering work, was brought on board to the project’s team to execute the tricky basement construction. In turn, they developed a new innovative piling design and technique for this job to ensure that the basement area could be excavated safely while butting up against the two existing bordering properties. To accelerate the production time of this task and to minimize the number of construction joints used, the project team went with shotcrete concrete construction.
To apply the concrete and make it waterproof in one easy step, the project team added Kryton’s waterproofing admixture, KIM, directly to the shotcrete mix. That allowed the project team to waterproof the basement floor slab, lower ground floor slab, and basement walls.
Then, to waterproof all the basement joints, the project team used Kryton’s Krystol Waterstop System.
With the help of the two Kryton products, the project team produced results and a work speed that both pleased and impressed the homeowner in the end.
Krystol Internal Membrane (KIM) is a hydrophilic crystalline admixture used to create permanently waterproof concrete.
Krystol Waterstop Grout is a crystalline grout used to create an internal or external waterstop at construction joints, pipe penetrations, tie-holes and control joints.
Krystol Waterstop Treatment is a cementitious crystalline slurry that is applied to horizontal and vertical construction joints to provide additional waterproofing protection, and protect rebar from corrosion.
Krytonite Swelling Waterstop is a synthetic rubber waterstop that uses swelling pressure to seal concrete construction joints and stop water.
Kryton’s Crack Inducing Waterstop is specially engineered to produce a waterproof crack control joint.
The Krystol Waterstop System is used to permanently waterproof concrete construction joints, pipe penetrations, tie holes and control joints. The Krystol Waterstop System works where other waterstops routinely fail. Kryton is the only integral waterproofing company that offers fully integrated concrete waterproofing solutions.
