Recent population and demographic changes in the City of Burnaby along with the decommissioning of the old existing CG Brown Pool created the need for a new full service community center.
Much public consultation led the City to create a plan for an 7900 square meter (85,000 square foot) center featuring a leisure pool which would include a ‘lazy river’, 6-lane lap pool, youth and senior lounge, two gymnasiums and an indoor playground. The center would target for LEED Silver or higher.
The City was aiming for LEED Silver which means traditional PVC based membranes would not be an option, because of their detrimental environmental effects. The construction team looked at Kryton’s Krystol Internal Membrane (KIM) concrete waterproofing admixture for a solution to their waterproofing needs. The pool sits above two floors of underground public parking so leaks could not be tolerated.
Kryton confirmed through testing that the presence of Chloride would not reduce or limit the ability of the KIM admixture to self-seal hairline cracks in the concrete. KIM’s ability to self-seal minor cracks and the fact that KIM has no VOCs and therefore is not detrimental to requirements to obtain LEED Silver made KIM the perfect choice for the Aquatic Centre.
Over 9000 Kg (20,000 lb.) of the KIM admixture was added to the pool concrete. Kryton’s Krystol Waterstop System was used on all cold joints in the pool and the Krystol Crack Repair System was also used to repair a few shrinkage cracks that appeared during construction.
The center will be open in early 2013.
Krystol Internal Membrane (KIM) is a hydrophilic crystalline admixture used to create permanently waterproof concrete.
Krystol Waterstop Grout is a crystalline grout used to create an internal or external waterstop at construction joints, pipe penetrations, tie-holes and control joints.
Krystol Waterstop Treatment is a cementitious crystalline slurry that is applied to horizontal and vertical construction joints to provide additional waterproofing protection, and protect rebar from corrosion.
Krytonite Swelling Waterstop is a synthetic rubber waterstop that uses swelling pressure to seal concrete construction joints and stop water.
Kryton’s Crack Inducing Waterstop is specially engineered to produce a waterproof crack control joint.
The Krystol Waterstop System is used to permanently waterproof concrete construction joints, pipe penetrations, tie holes and control joints. The Krystol Waterstop System works where other waterstops routinely fail. Kryton is the only integral waterproofing company that offers fully integrated concrete waterproofing solutions.
