Made possible through generous local donations, the Greenwich Family YMCA in Connecticut was granted construction approval of a new Olympic pool as the centerpiece for its new state of the art Olympic Aquatics Center.
Completed earlier this year, the pool measures 50-meters by 25-meters (164 feet by 72 feet) and is opened for recreation, competition, and lap swim. The pool also features a 4 meter (13-feet) deep diving well and is equipped for optimum diving training.
Initially, Kryton’s Krystol Internal Membrane (KIM) was specified for this new Olympic pool construction by the project consultant. As a cost-saving measure, the KIM admixture was eliminated and a lesser joint detail was employed. This waterstop system failed completely and the structure cracked in several sections under the extreme pressure and weight.
The roughly 3,220,000 liter (850,000 gallon) pool was test filled and lost over 450,000 (120,000 gallons) of water in a 24-hour period to the parking deck below. The general contractor called on New England Dry Concrete, a distributor of the Kryton water proofing system, at the request of the pool consultant to see how they could remedy the situation.
New England Dry Concrete performed a total joint repair employing Kryton’s crack repair system on the entire wall and joint perimeter. In addition to the Crack Repair System, another 2000 meter (600 linear feet) of cracks was repaired at various locations throughout the pool walls and floor. Sections of the pool were then treated with surface applied Krystol T1 & T2 Waterproofing System.
The pool stopped leaking and enabling the project to progress and be completed on time.
Krystol T1 is a surface applied crystalline slurry treatment that transforms new or existing concrete into a permanent waterproofing barrier.
As part of the Krystol Leak Repair System, Krystol Plug is a rapid-setting hydraulic cement product that when mixed with water is used to stop flowing water and repair leaking cracks, holes and joints in concrete.
The Krystol Leak Repair System is a permanent crystalline waterproofing solution used for repairing leaking cracks, holes and joints found in concrete. It reliably stops high water flow, even under high-hydrostatic pressure, and outperforms injection systems. Repairing leaks is a simple 3-step process that involves…
