The IKEA store in the Tempe region of Sydney, Australia is the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere spanning 37,000 square meters (equivalent to 20 football fields) with on a 2.3 hectare site. Making this building unique, the site for the store is a reclaimed landfill, known locally as the Tempe Tip. The store development comprises of a two level rectangular shaped building including: parking for 1,775 cars, a bulky goods showroom, unlicensed restaurant (approximate capacity for 750 people), children’s play area, warehouse, Swedish food market, office space, public amenities and loading dock.
Based on a previous experience, the team of contractors knew that Kryton’s Krystol Internal Membrane (KIM) would be ideal for waterproofing the below grade areas, lift pits, travelators pits, basement sections and water tank. Just over 100 cubic meters of KIM treated concrete were used to permanently waterproof the below grade areas of the new store.
