If you’re investing in expensive property, look no further than Manhattan, NYC where the wealthiest of wealthy invest in real-estate. Sitting at 157 West 57th Street, the One57 skyscraper epitomizes luxury giving credit to the newly minted moniker for West 57th “Billionaires Row”. In fact, One57 has been a part of the two most expensive properties ever sold in NYC – a duplex for $91.5 million and the penthouse for a little over $100 million.
With a highly coveted location and price tags in the upper 7-digits, the building must be built to last. Insofar that it is 90-floors high with tall-buildings surrounding it, repairs, restoration, or tear downs needed to be avoided at all costs. A big issue for a building of this size is fighting a fire if one were to break out high in the building. This is where fire suppression systems are needed. However, with all that water, leaks could become an issue. An innovative waterproofing measure was needed for this beacon of real-estate superiority.
Kryton’s Krystol Internal Membrane (KIM) was used to waterproof a large concrete tank on the 75th floor of the 90-floor building. The tank sits on the suspended slab and is used for fire suppression system that services the upper levels of the building. These tanks are often made of steel, which corrode; wood, which decays over time; or concrete with an external membrane that tears, all of which leak into the units and cause costly damage.
Using KIM to waterproof the concrete allows the suppression system to use durable concrete that will last the life of the structure without cracks or leaks that could cause damage. The large fire suppression tank is currently working as specified without incident.
