In 2014, Brunei Darussalam’s general hospital, Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS), expanded to include the Women and Children Hospital. This new $69-million facility opened in early 2015 with 382 beds for women and children and improved patient facilities and services all encompassed within a state-of-the-art structure.
During its construction, the project team found that the building timeline and costs were of the utmost importance for effectively managing the expansion’s overall life-cycle costs. That meant they needed products with a proven, time-tested technology they could count on to do the job the first time around. It was especially important for the expansion’s concrete waterproofing as the Ministry of Health had relied on external membranes in the past and found their performance wanting. As a result, the team needed a waterproofing solution with a great track record. They needed an innovative waterproofing solution.
Kryton’s over 45 years in the industry and origins as a pioneer of crystalline waterproofing technology made their solutions the easy choice for the Ministry of Health. After the project engineers conducted extensive testing and evaluation of the solutions, they selected KIM for all the suspended roof slab and roof garden areas. They trusted its performance and knew that due to the top floor of the hospital being flat, they would need such a reliable concrete waterproofing system in place as the VIP rooms were located just below.
To add to this protection, they applied Krystol T1 and Krystol T2 to all wet areas and toilets. Then, they used Krystol Waterstop Treatment to create a watertight seal for all of the expansion’s pipe penetrations.
In the end, this Kryton waterproofing system proved to be worth it. Its application didn’t come with all the labor-intensive steps that an external membrane installation would have. And unlike external membranes, the system isn’t prone to tearing. All of which made for a high-performing, reliable waterproofing system that shaved hours off of the expansion’s construction timeline, kept the Women and Children Hospital leak-free, and impressed the RIPAS’ project manager, Mr. Osawa. The overall impression was so great that Mr. Osawa decided to use Kryton’s waterproofing system on future projects.
